To say that The Second Crusade is just as good as his first book, The Vlishgnath Chronicles, would be a lie -it is ten times better. Daniel Mitchell has surpassed himself in this prequel which follows the rise of Vlishgnath's father, Roningus the Wrathful Tempest, as he faces off against the forces of the dead god Necros who tries to gain a foothold once again in the world. Battling vampires, half demons and dreadnoughts, Roningus cuts his way through his enemies while guarding himself against those in the church who wish to see him fail. In a world vivid with imagery, the characters quickly take hold and once finished with the book, you wish that there were 300 more pages to carry on in their adventures.I have had the pleasure of writing with Mr. Mitchell in a crossover story between two of our characters and it astounds me at how easily he can create a world in which you become absorbed in. He has quickly become one of my favorite authors, both personally and professionally.
For an adventure that you will not soon forget, this is definitely a must have for all fans of fantasy!

what can i say about this book other than, If this book was a potato, it would be a great potato.
A "prequel" to The Vlishgnath Chronicles, the Second Crusade wastes no time in proving the "good" guy doesn't have to be the "nice" guy.
The "Wrathful Tempest" had me laughing out loud at his audacity and effectiveness.
Sometimes the right strategy is just burning down the town.
A fun read to be sure.

That quote from my favorite movie was perfectly answered by Mitchell's The Second Crusade. He's crafted a setting for his story where our brawny heroes cavort with each other bereft of the influence of the fairer sex. In this world where nary a whiff of anything feminine is present, the close bond between these masculine creatures is explored rather subtly with deft execution by the author. Here they are free to appreciate men who are manly, and embody what it means to be a man. Lusty as they are wont to be, the sex in this book is all implied, but the reader experiences it in triumphant bursts of lurid passion none the less. When Roningus faces his rival Asmodeus stripped of his armor, and barehanded, Mitchell speaks lovingly of their bodies, and miraculous abilities. Their limbs are said to have twisted over, and upon each other again, and again, and when they take up arms, Asmodeus spreads his wings, and they are torn asunder.
Man, I needed a cigarette after that one, and I don't even smoke!
A man who is a man's man will love this story of men who behave in exceedingly masculine ways, and exhibit an unfaltering confidence in their own masculinity, and will be esteemed, and universally welcomed by other men.
Daniel makes the interaction between his characters come alive. They seems to have honest and genuine connections to each other and the world In which they reside. Excellent read highly recommended.
This book was an amazing read, I was engrossed from the start. I have now read the two following books and hope to see more adventures in this world.
